About the Author
With more than 30 years of communications experience, Hey Ref! creator Joe Burris is a consummate storyteller and versed at helping people share their own stories.
Joe served as a sportswriter for the Nashville Tennessean and Boston Globe and was a features and education reporter for the Baltimore Sun. Joe also wrote freelance articles for such publications as the Sporting News and National Geographic's The 10 Best of Everything: An Ultimate Guide for Travelers. Joe also lectured journalism students at colleges in the Baltimore-Washington, D.C. area.
As journalist, Joe authored stories on sports, lifestyle and education, profiling such people as former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, actor and activist Harry Belafonte, pro tennis great Martina Navratilova, former astronaut and U.S. Senator John Glenn and two Munchkins from the motion picture, The Wizard of Oz.
As a five-year program officer for the Marguerite Casey Foundation in Seattle, national foundation, Joe has helped non-profit organizations highlight their work for local and national attention.
Joe's stories that have been reprinted in publications around the world, and his writing style was praised in the books Sports Writing, the Lively Game by Conrad C. Fink and Minor League Baseball and Local Economic Development by Arthur T. Johnson.
